I’ve mentioned before that I have a side project where I write short pieces (scenes and stories) to explore different script writing techniques. I thought that this week I’d share an example in which I explored some ideas around building suspense.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

Here are some general observations on building suspense…

Suspense is a result of worry. If we don’t care about the character we won’t feel it. Therefore, the first rule of suspense is – make the character relatable.

Suspense usually requires the listener to know more than the character (the character is unaware of the danger but the listener knows and is worried) and it is therefore harder to create in the first person. We have to shift the perspective around a bit. This can be difficult to pull off regardless.

Suspense is created when the writer poses a question that the reader wants to know the answer to (will the protagonist be discovered by the villains who are hunting him/her?)

Suspense is sustained by deferring the answer to that question, by adding complications, and by continually increasing the peril and introducing new questions (What will happen to the innocent backpackers who, knowing nothing of the danger, are heading right into the area being searched by the villain?).

Suspense requires revelation. At a certain point the protagonist must become aware of the peril. If they remain in the dark, most audience members will feel cheated.

Suspense is increased by focusing in on the protagonists senses (narrowing the focus to the racing heartbeat, the sweating palms, and the shaking hands). People in peril don’t stop to notice the gorgeous pattern on the wallpaper, so remember to narrow the focus of the audio (fade out the background and fade in the protagonist’s breathing and heartbeat etc.).

Suspense requires a payoff equal to promise implied in the question.

THINGS TO AVOID

Don’t expect the peril faced by your protagonist to create the maximum amount of suspense (your listenerer is likely to assume the protagonist will come through fine – even if they wont – and therefore won’t invest as much in the outcome). Make sure you have companions, and bystanders to care. Kill someone off early and the audience won’t be quite so sure that the other supporting characters will make it through alive.

Don’t put strangers in peril – no-one cares. Provide enough information for the listener to want these supporting characters to succeed, while not knowing if they will. Uncertainty regarding someone we care about is the key.

Don’t overdo the obstacles – beyond a certain point the listener will think to themselves “this is just getting silly”, at which point they will switch off the play and get a good night’s sleep.

Don’t subvert the promise of the question posed at the beginning of your attempt at suspense. If it turns out that the noise was simply that of the neighbour’s cat, the listener will feel cheated.

EXAMPLE

Another Day in the Jungle – A Tale of Suspense/

ANALYSIS

I’ve tried to (very quickly) create some relatable characters. Our hero, Jake, is a guy who is willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of others (if a little world weary). Paul exists only to watch and interact with Jake (so he’s particularly two-dimensional). I’ve also tried to reveal (in super quick sketch form) that the corporal is a decent guy and that M’Kenga is the breadwinner for his family. Not a lot to go on in a short space, but hopefully enough to make it matter when they are placed in peril.

The question of the piece is “who will live and who will die when the bomb goes off?”

In this case our characters are all aware of the danger, though there is a moment where the boys don’t realise their peril.

I’ve chosen to defer answering the question of the piece repeatedly…

the first monkey grabs a grenade

the other monkeys do likewise

the corporal opens the door onto the scene

the local boys come to take a look

the jeep arrives blaring its horn.

I’ve attempted to use sound to focus in on the details and intensify the suspense (the crunch of each of Jake’s careful steps, in particular).

I’ve placed bystanders in peril along with our protagonist.

I’ve tried to pay off the question of the piece with the explosion at the end.

So, does it work? Are there other principles of suspenseful scene design that I’m neglecting? What have I missed or overlooked in this analysis of the horror genre? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

ACT 1

SCENE 1 : (EXT) MILITARY BASE – MID AFTERNOON
(PAUL, JAKE, CORPORAL, BOY #1, BOY #2, BOY #3, JEEP DRIVER)

MUSIC: OPENING THEME – LET IT FINISH.

SOUND: (WALLA) DISTANT JUNGLE NOISES, BOYS KICKING A BALL AROUND – ESTABLISH AND UNDER.

PAUL: It’s too damned hot Jake.

JAKE: Aw, stop your whining. Your supposed to be an intelligence officer.

PAUL: Yeah, but I’m no James Bond. I just read reports at a desk for a living… preferably at a desk with air-conditioning.

JAKE:

PAUL: Hey, it’s not everyone that’s cut out to be a hero. What will it be this time, anyway? Your third purple heart? And how’s your arm coming along?

JAKE: The arm’ll heal eventually. This African humidity’s the worst. An infection here is lethal. As for the rest. I don’t want the medals.

PAUL: C’mon. You’ve earned them.

JAKE: I did what I’m paid to do. I killed a bunch of men. Killing is killing. I don’t want a pat on the head.

PAUL: But you saved a bunch of our guys too, when you took out that nest.

JAKE: Look, just leave it, okay. If you’re gonna keep yapping at me like this I’ll go wait for the mail jeep somewhere else.

PAUL: Sure Jake, don’t get sore.

JAKE: (DISTRACTED) Aw, will you look at that!

PAUL: What?

JAKE: Over by the armory. That corporal’s not supposed to be unloading the shipment alone.

PAUL: Yeah, the lieutenant came by earlier and pulled his partner off the detail. Are those boxes of grenades he’s got stacked out in the open?

JAKE: Yeah… the idiot.

PAUL: The corporal or the lieutenant?

JAKE: You decide!

PAUL: Don’t be too hard on the Corporal. He’s actually a good guy, if a little wet behind the ears. And it’s not like the grenades are going to cook off, even in this heat.

JAKE: You really haven’t spent much time in the field have you? Who’d you tick off to get posted to a U.S base in the middle of an African Civil War anyway?

PAUL: Hey, no need to get personal.

JAKE: Look, it’s not the heat I’m concerned about. See those kids by the gate, the ones from the village who keep hanging about hoping to get an odd job or two from the soldiers on base?

PAUL: Sure, I see ‘em. The eldest is called M’kenga. He’s got half a dozen brothers and sisters at home that he helps support by doing these “odd jobs”. But I don’t think they’ll be getting any work today. Too hot.

JAKE: Yeah, and way too close to the truck. If the boredom gets to them and they wander over while the corporal’s inside the armory… and those grenades are unattended…

PAUL: Ok, I see your point.

SOUND: DISTANT DOOR CLOSING – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: Aw hell, he’s gone inside with a crate of ammo and left the grenades just sitting there. (WEARY AND RESIGNED) Come on.

PAUL: Yeah, yeah. Let me weight this paperwork down so it doesn’t blow away.

JAKE: You even do paperwork when you grabbing a smoke? Sheesh!

SOUND: BOOTS WALKING AWAY.

PAUL: Here I come.

SOUND: BOOTS AGAIN – FADE UNDER.

SOUND: CURIOUS MONKEY CHATTER – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: Hang on… don’t come any closer.

PAUL: What?

JAKE: (VOICE EVEN) A chimp’s come in from the perimeter. It’s sitting on the grenade box.

PAUL: Oh hell. (BEAT) Jake, can you back away. It’s picked up a grenade.

JAKE: It’s already pulled the pin. The only thing stopping it from going off is the chimp’s grip on the safety lever. Hang on, I’ll try to move toward you.

SOUND: AGITATED MONKEY CHATTER – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: Nope, I don’t think it likes that.

PAUL: You’re way too close. If that goes off, you’ll be caught in the blast.

JAKE: If the grenade goes off while the chimp’s sitting on top of a crate of explosives like that there isn’t going to be enough left of me to care. You, on other hand, are pretty safe where you are. Just don’t come any closer.

SOUND: MONKEY CALLING TO IT’S COMPANIONS – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: Oh no. Here come some more.

SOUND: CHATTERING MONKEYS – LET IT FINISH.

PAUL: I count three, no four of them. Three have picked up grenades and…

SOUND: MONKEY SCREECH – LET IT FINISH.

PAUL: …two of them have pulled out the pins.

JAKE: Yeah, I can see that. Now tell me something I don’t know.

SOUND: DOOR OPENS – LET IT FINISH.

SOUND: MONKEYS SCREECH – LET IT FINISH.

CORPORAL: Oh, excuse me sir, I…

JAKE: Corporal, go back inside… (URGENTLY) quietly.

CORPORAL: (WHISPERING) Yes, sir. (HESITATES) Sir? The armoury is full of explosives?

JAKE: I can see that soldier.

CORPORAL: Yes, sir.

SOUND: DOOR CLOSES (QUIETLY)

PAUL: Okay, what now?

JAKE: What do you mean?

PAUL: I mean… what’s your plan?

JAKE: Stay very still and try not to get blown up.

PAUL: You’re kidding?

JAKE: You got a better one?

PAUL: .. no.

BOY #1: Hey, look at the monkeys.

JAKE: Oh, no no no no!

PAUL: (WHISPER YELLING) Boys, stay where you are.

BOY #2: Ha ha, look at them?

BOY #3: It’s monkeys! (Ad lib excited chatter).

JAKE: No, boys! Stop!

SOUND: MONKEY’S SHRIEK THREATENINGLY – LET IT FINISH.

BOY #1: Hey, they’ve got bombs.

JAKE: Don’t any of you make a sound.

BOY #1: But Mister…

SOUND: MONKEY SHRIEK – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: Not… one… sound.

BOY #2: (STARTS WHIMPERING) I’m scared…

JAKE: (LOW AND CALM) I’m going to make my way over to you, alright. Just don’t panic.

SOUND: MONKEY’S OOKING QUIETLY – UNDER

SOUND: FOOT STEP CRUNCH – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: One…

SOUND: FOOTSTEP CRUNCH – LET IT FINISH.

Jake: Two…

SOUND: JEEP APPROACHING FROM DISTANCE – FADE IN.

PAUL : Jake, don’t do anything stupid…

SOUND: FOOTSTEP CRUNCH – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: (TO PAUL) The grenades will rip those boys to pieces if I can’t get between them and the chimps.

SOUND: FOOTSTEP CRUNCH – LET IT FINISH.

SOUND: MONKEY GETTING MORE AGITATED – UNDER.

SOUND: LOUD HONK OF HORN AS MAIL JEEP ARRIVES – UNDER.

PAUL: It’s the mail jeep!

JAKE : Boy’s get down.

SOUND: BOYS ARE TACKLED TO THE GROUND – UNDER.

SOUND: MONKEY’S SQUEAL IN FRIGHT AND CHITTER OFF INTO THE DISTANCE – FADE OUT.

PAUL: Oh, thank God. They’ve gone. (BEAT) Jake, are you okay.

JAKE: Okay boys. We can get up. (GRUNTS) Now get out of here.

BOYS: (OVERLAPPING) Thank you mister. Yes, thankyou. Thanks. Etc.

SOUND: BOYS RUN OFF – FADE AWAY.

PAUL: What about the monkeys? They ran off towards the jungle but…

SOUND: BOOM OF GRENADE FOLLOWED CLOSELY BY THREE OTHERS ALMOST ON TOP OF EACH OTHER – LET IT FINISH.

JAKE: I think that takes care of them.

PAUL: (ALMOST ACCUSING) You threw yourself on top of those boys to protect them.

JAKE: Huh?

PAUL: I’m just saying. I don’t think you just do what you do ‘cause you’re paid to.

JAKE: Just drop it, will ya.

SOUND: JAKE WALKS AWAY – LET IT FINISH.

SOUND: DOOR OPENS – LET IT FINISH.

CORPORAL: The monkeys. Are they gone?

PAUL: Yes, corporal… they’re gone.

JEEP DRIVER: (AT A DISTANCE) Hey! Hey, does anybody want this mail?

PAUL: I ticked someone off big time to get sent here. I’m from Olympia (not all that far from Vancouver) so believe me when I tell you, we don’t do hot where I come from. I like my comforts. When I signed up as an analyst, I didn’t expect to be stuck out in the field in the middle of the heat of an African war zone. Yep. I ticked someone off big time.

JAKE: The wound’s not bad and I’m happy to talk with you over a beer. Just lay off that hero stuff will you. Heroes are nothing more than survivors who did what they had to do in order to walk out on two legs. There’s nothing special about ’em. And there’s nothing special about me. So don’t get it into your head that I’m going to be the source of some exciting yarn you can share with your friends. If that’s what you’re after you can drink alone.

CORPORAL: Hurry up and wait. That’s the army way. And if the job I had help with is made twice as hard because the other guy is ordered away by the Lieutenant then that’s just the way it is. I could grip about it, but it wouldn’t change anything. But it’s against regulations to unload explosives this way. If anyone cares, I’ll be the one on report. Not the lieutenant. Damn, I’ll be glad when my tour is over.

BOY 1-3: We’re from the village. We play soccer (and marbles if we can trade some off the soldiers). We hang around the army camp for money. The soldiers send us on jobs. “Get us beer”. “Get us cigarettes”. That kind of thing. They give us money, so they don’t have to do it themselves. They are very lazy, but we don’t mind. We give the money to our families.

JEEP DRIVER: It’s hot and dusty work, but at least it’s appreciated. Everyone wants news from home and I get to bring it. Mostly it’s good news. Sometimes it’s not. The only thing I’ve really got to worry about is running into the occasional rebel patrol. They don’t like us very much on account of them thinking we provide intelligence to the government. They’re right of course, and I kind of understand it. There’s not a lot of difference between the thugs in power and the thugs who want to be in power. But Uncle Sam likes peace and quiet, so he’s siding with the current government… which means I need to keep my head down and my sidearm handy.

REBEL: I’m a signalman. I transmit messages for my commander. Sometimes those messages are ordinary. Sometimes they are coded. Sometimes, however, they are just plain weird. I transmit them anyway because that is my job.

Suspense is probably the most famous and successful of the anthology programs of radio’s golden age. It ran successfully for years bringing new stories each week (no small challenge for a show that had no recurring characters for the audience to connect with or care about). Today’s episode, The Burning Court, is one of the earliest surviving episodes in the Suspense Anthology. Enjoy!

This is our audio drama showcase where we discuss great public domain audio dramas on a bi-weekly basis. If you are subscribed to our newsletter and registered on our site you will have free access to these great audio downloads.
This week we showcase one of the truly great peformances in audio drama. Agnes Moorhead’s melodramatic performance in “Sorry, Wrong Number” is one of the most famous character performances in radio. “Sorry, Wrong Number” follows the increasingly desperate attempts of a woman (who has accidentally overhears a murder plot on a crossed line) to get someone to take the issue seriously. It is an example of voice acting at its finest. So, sit back, relax, and turn the lights down low as we present “Sorry, Wrong Number”. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
