This week we showcase the second and concluding part of a truly great piece of science fiction. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley paints a picture of the future where human beings have lost their autonomy over the technologies they employ. Mr Aldous Huxley himself introduces the program with a dire warning about the future it represents. This is a great story that has been extremely prescient about the advances in social control that our technology is providing. The show is extremely well scripted and the acting is enjoyable. A true classic.

This week we bring you a fmaous episode from “The Burns and Allen Show” called “Grandpa’s 92nd Birthday”. The husband and wife team of George Burns and Gracie Allen were a huge hit from the 30s through to the late 50s. They began in vaudeville and brought their vaudeville sensibility to radio. Originally, the roles were a little reversed (with George playing the foolish character while Gracie played the straight role) but they found audiences responded more positively to Gracie’s dimwitted but lovable characterisations and quickly switched. This is classic Burns and Allen, riffing on the oddness of Gracie’s family for lots of laughs. Enjoy!

This week we bring you another episode of The Shadow “The White God”. The Shadow, largely forgotten now, is one of the major influences on the creation of Batman, and is a much immitated icon of heroic adventure. Few people realise today just how ground-breaking and sinister this morally ambiguous figure was in its day. In many ways he was the first anti-hero, albeit one who always fought on the side of good. “Crime doesn’t pay” Enjoy!

These stories received an undeservedly poor reputation from listeners when they were first broadcast. Many listeners, not realising the program was authored by the legendary Walter B. Gibson, mistakenly felt the show was a competitor to his other great creation; the Shadow. Enjoy!

This week we bring you the Walter B Gibson (you know, the writer of The Shadow) serial featuring his other great character; The Avenger. When this radio serial was first released it was not met with great warmth by the radio public. Some viewed it as direct competition to their favourite story (the Shadow) while others considered it too derivative (a poor man’s copy of the same). Time’s verdict has been kinder. The program was developed by the same team that created the Shadow and benefited from the mature experience provided by the first show. The stories are fun pulp fare and sure to entertain. Today we bring you “The Coins of Death”. Enjoy!

This week we turn our attention to one of the longest running shows of the golden age of radio, the classic comedy series Fibber McGee and Molly. In this episode we see the rivalry between Fibber and next-door neighbour Gildersleeve break out amidst an attempt at New Year’s good cheer. The show began it’s life in the style of a vaudeville review, but gradually morphed into a recognisable sitcom with running gags such as Fibber’s one sided telephone calls and regular encounters with the neighbours. This week we continue with the third and final in our three part series showcasing the work of Carlton Morse. Among the really big names in Radio Drama production from the golden age of radio there is one we haven’t showcased to date. It’s not because he was any less talented than these others (Orson Wells, Norman Corwin, Arch Oboler etc.) but because he specialised in the creation of serials – a format that doesn’t lend itself to showcasing without a significant commitment of time. Well to remedy this we are going to showcase Carlton Morse’s short, three part serial, “The Girl on Shipwreck Island” one last time. Enjoy!
